The 1985 – 1986 season proved to be a big one for the rams as they were in emphatic form as they finished off in a very strong third position, which in turn earned the club promotion out of the third division in to the second.
Arthur Cox guided the Rams into the top flight again at the end of the 1986 – 1987 second division campaign as they finished it off crowned second division champions at the end of the 1986 – 1987 season.
The following season saw Derby adjust back to life playing top flight football in a decent way, finishing the campaign off in a decent 15th position, more than matching many top opponents. They were unfortunate to crash out of the league cup in the second round as they lost on penalties against Southend United.
Cox signed Dean Saunders at the start of the 1988 – 1989 season and it proved to be an inspired signing as he was prolific in front of goal. Mark Wright also made an outstaying contribution to the cause as the Rams enjoyed a fine fifth position finish, establishing themselves an s a top first division side once again. They ere unlucky to crash out of the FA cup in the fourth round as they suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat against Watford.
The 1989 – 1990 season saw Derby County finish off the campaign in 16th position as they slid down the table as the campaign went on.
